Antique Cut Diamonds

Prior to the 1500s, diamonds were a poor second to rubies, sapphires, emeralds and pearls because they were too hard to be cut or faceted. The first attempts were flat bottom "Rose-Cuts." By the early 1700s, cutters were producing the first fully-faceted diamonds..."Old Mine Cuts." As cutting technology improved, so did the results, and by the mid 1800s, the tall, round Old European Cuts were all the rage. By 1910, diamond cutters, led by Bostonians, were producing today's lovely Modern Cuts.
